George Penniman Architects LLC has provided its clients thoughtful, thorough and responsive solutions to a wide range of architectural challenges since 1993. Completed projects in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, range in scale from small additions to significant estates.

A sense of respect underlies all aspects of the design process. This respect extends to the requirements of the client; the environmental, social and historical context into which the building is placed; any existing structure; building materials, and the builders and craftsmen who give built form to the ideas expressed in a set of our drawings. Our task as architects is to synthesize and reconcile these opportunities and constraints, using them as a catalyst to create a beautiful built form.

We respect the tradition of which our work is a part, yet we will not deliberately copy or recreate works of the past. A project should be timeless and never look dated. We create houses and additions that reflect the Owner’s ideas, priorities and lifestyle, rather than our own preconceptions. We create spaces that allow for the delight of discovery: the way sunlight moves through a room, the shadow of a window's design on a wall, a composed view from one space to the next. A house may contain grand, elegantly proportioned spaces for a crowd, as well as cozy, sculpted spaces for moments of private reflection.

Our affiliation with Anne Penniman Associates LLC, Landscape Architecture and Site Planning, assures projects that are carefully integrated with the site and existing environmental features. A new house will look as if it belongs nowhere else but on its particular site. An addition will look as if it has always been a part of the overall composition. Situating the house on the site is crucial, as is the experience of the site from inside the house – the views and the functional relationship of indoor and outdoor spaces.

We are a service oriented firm, believing that the best projects result from the input and collaboration of everyone involved. Limiting the size and scope of the practice allows us to guarantee close attention to our client’s need throughout the life of the project. An approach that regards a project as a team effort and our long-term relationships with contractors, craftsmen and consultants assure the best possible solution to any given situation. A design progresses from conceptual pencil sketches to sophisticated computer-aided-drafting documents, with the client’s input throughout the process. We prefer to remain thoroughly involved during the construction process, realizing that every member of the project team has something to contribute, and that many creative solutions are generated on the building site.

Whether designing a house to allow for the growth of a family or the privacy and comfort of an individual or couple, our ideals and approach remain consistent.
