Squash Court
Upon completion of major renovations and alterations to their house, the owners of this property proposed the challenge of creating a regulation squash court attached to an existing modest-sized carriage house without overwhelming the original structure. The design challenge was further complicated by the structural complexity of locating the large building on a steep hill and attaching it to the existing carriage house without undermining its foundation. The squash court entry is set back from the face of the carriage house. The stucco finish recalls the main house but recedes relative to the stone facade of the carriage house. Once inside, stairs lead down to a viewing gallery and descend further to the court level. Above the garage bays, tucked under the eaves, is a bunk room with built-in beds.
